The Medicalization of Marijuana

Legitimacy, Stigma, and the Patient Experience

This book takes a comprehensive look at how medical cannabis patients negotiate marijuana's incomplete integration into medicine. Their experiences reveal how social construction has shaped our relationship with this controversial plant.

Drawing on interviews with midlife patients in Colorado, a state at the forefront of medical cannabis implementation, this book explores the practical decisions individuals confront about medical use, including whether cannabis will work for them; the risks of registering in a state program; and how to handle questions of supply, dosage, and routines of use.

I joined this project as a co-author to update the tenth edition of this innovative textbook, with special attention to refreshing the qualitative methods coverage. Understanding Research Methods provides material that is "chunked" into small content bites to help students with the important research methods concepts It is a format that suits the generations of social media natives to more easily follow complex topics, and it allows instructors to easily mix and match content to suit their teaching needs. This book covers quantitative and qualitative research that works well for undergraduates or early graduate students. Excerpts from real studies throughout provide concrete examples of the concepts. The book is highly suitable as a guide for students  who are writing a research paper or proposal, because the book walks through the steps that would be needed to do so successfully in the order they are usually completed. Its suggested activities also make this a useful self-help guide. Statistics are explained but no computations are covered, making it appropriate for students with any math background. Students will learn how to read statistics in the research and write about them in their own work. Literature reviews, study designs, and analysis of data are discussed, as are academic citation styles and writing approaches.
